Because those LLM are basically a word generator, without any chess engine built into it. The produced answer/result is basically a string of generated words without them actually "understand" the meaning
Hence when you give them a chess puzzle (how easy or simple it is) they are not actually have the puzzle imagined or simulated visually by their system, they just transform (there's the T at gpt) it as a string of data and tokens, process it with their word processing logic, and spew out the most convincing sound answer they can generate, without actually understanding the puzzle.
