I once had the light-bulb realization that an LLM was just parroting other people's words, then proceeded to tell the LLM that it was a mindless parrot. Then I immediately felt extremely guilty and apologized. You're exactly right, but I think the problem is that humans will always have very human responses to things. People name Roombas and try not to hurt stuffed animals' feelings; of course we end up ascribing sentience to LLMs, then get way freaked out. And they urgently need to stop being marketed as intelligent
