I learned recently that the original luddites weren’t anti-technology per se, rather they saw that the auto-looms produced poor quality textiles. They were concerned that the public would get used to the poorer quality fabric and make it even harder to continue their trade. In the short term it cost a lot of people their jobs, 200 years later fast fashion is approaching the logical end of the luddites concerns, clothes we literally wear once and throw away. It hurts everyone involved.
AI “art” is the same way. A passing glance at these images says they’re fine, but I think we all are quickly becoming aware of the mental and social toll being fed AI slop is having on us and our communities.
