The metaphor is great, but the thing is that if you work in a warehouse, chances are you just want to move around stuff in a forklift, because you focus on solving the problem at hand and not at improving your physical fitness. Often however improving/learning and applying are not always neatly separated. Most people build most of their knowledge while practically working. This causes a real dilemma when it comes to super tools like AI. Take programming. You are paid to solve a problem at hand, so you might be tempted to take the shortcut and have AI assist you. However, you probably learned little to nothing doing that. If you always work like that, you sacrifice your own development and only slowly or never progress to become a better developer. As you said, knowledge comes with grinding, and AI lets you avoid the grind. But since the purpose of most work is not solely learning but mostly getting the job done, the incentives work against learning. Even worse, companies might not care at all about your development over the next 5 years, as you will probably work somewhere else by then, causing them to press employees to sacrifice knowledge development by using AI to get the job done faster. And if all companies do this, the whole industry will suffer, as knowledge stagnates. The dilemma here is real.
