The fact that I had to scroll down this far to before seeing anyone make this point shows how poorly the vast majority of people understand what’s at stake in the race to AGI. You’re absolutely correct that countries like China and Russia will not show any remorse in using copyrighted material to train their models, but another thing that most people don’t realize is it isn’t just adversarial superpowers with whom we are competing. Anyone with enough motivation and means/access to comparatively mundane resources could potentially cross the finish line first.
I am by no means saying that it is right for the creators to have their hard work and livelihoods stolen, and definitely not that it is acceptable for someone to lose their life 😳. Only that there is no way at this point to unring the AI bell 🤷♂️.
