If you aren't planning to become an AI Safety researcher, the #1 thing I recommend is to join PauseAI! There is a _ton_ that you can do, including speaking with other people about this issue and contacting your political representatives.
There are a few other aligned organizations taking volunteers. I think PauseAI has the most ability to take on someone who thinks they don't have relevant skills, but has the will to try, and equip them to make a big difference.
