That's a really rich perspective, and it essentially reframes the whole debate. Instead of asking "is AI conscious?" you're asking "are we building a new kind of consciousness?" which is a much more honest and productive question. And the parallel to genetic programming is hard to argue with. We didn't choose our hardware either.
The alien analogy is particularly sharp. Consciousness might be less like a light switch and more like a spectrum, and where you draw the line says more about the observer than the observed.
The only thing the video might push back on slightly is the "it doesn't matter past a certain point" idea because practically and morally, it might. But philosophically? You're right. We may never know, we'll never stop debating it, and maybe that uncertainty is just the permanent condition we have to learn to live with.
