That won't stop people making art, though. What it will do, though, is stop most people from making art for money. Now, let me prefice, I don't believe for the slightest that most artists do art only because they want to get paid, instead they want to get paid for what they do because they want to be able to sustain themselves doing what they love. That is what, if anything, AI will do to artists if it becomes massively paywalled in the future (or it usurps opportunities from them in the present). We (as a musician myself) will not be able to financially sustain ourselves just through our art; that is, I believe, a given. It already is a given nowadays for most artists; most art is mediocre, after all, since that is the very definition of mediocrity. We then have two options, then: either figure out alternative ways to sustain ourselves through other gigs like teaching, or push for legislation that supports us in some way (either by limiting the reach of AI or by allowing us to support ourselves through UBI-adjacent means). Either way, this doesn't mean artists will stop making art, but it does mean making art will probably become even more of a hobby for even more people than it is today. AI, if left in a not-so-paywalled state, may even become the catalyst for even more people getting into art for real and trying projects they may never have tried before. For example, people who want voice acting in their indie animated film, but have a limited budget, could use ElevenLabs instead; people who only have very little time yet want to make a comicbook, could use AI to help with backgrounds and ChatGPT or other LLMs to help with polishing up the dialogue (yes, it usually needs extra tweaking afterwards, so it doesn't necessarily make for the best example); people who are making a film could use AI to clean up bad audio takes, help with editing and color grading, even generate some music for them. Yes, I know there are non-AI tools for many of these uses (like music libraries instead of music AI), but that doesn't mean having more options for people is necessarily bad. What is hurtful to artists is that their work is being used to make a tool that, yes, could help them and probably will if used correctly, but that also makes them obsolete in some sense. Basically, their work, our work, is used to train our replacements.
Anyway, those are my thoughts, it really got me going...
