But unless you live in a "no fault" insurance state, you could sue your "friend" for the deductible or anything else your insurance didn't cover. Or if you were unable to pay all the claims by others even after insurance, they could sue him.
You're also right about how liability would probably apply in autonomous vehicles. Another good analogy for an autonomous vehicle is a vicious dog that you own: the dog is normally well-behaved, but you have no control over the actions of the dog in a specific case. If your dog mauls a toddler, they execute the dog and come after you for damages.
