Why not? I was under the impression that the difference between strong and weak AI is the specificity of it ability. The reason something like Siri is weak AI is that it was programmed only to do search, it can't do other things. IBMs Watson is the same way, programmed to find correlation between medical data and produce useful interpretations of that data, but still unable to complete other tasks.
Alpha-Go on the other hand was not programmed specifically to play Go. Instead it was created to "learn" and they just decided that Go was going to be what they taught it. It "learned" how to play go by having the rules given to it and then playing against people. It improved every time until it was able to beat the number one player in the world.
