The fact that damaging someone's brain changes their personality no more proves the non-existence of souls than the fact that messing with a telephone's handset changes the voice you hear proves the non-existence of the person on the other end of the line. The sounds you hear originate in the handset, but they're generated in accordance with a signal from elsewhere - similarly, it's possible that, while human actions are generated in the brain, they do so in accordance with signals from something non-physical. That's not to say that souls exist, just that there's not sufficient evidence to consider the question settled. Of course, it's reasonable to say that there are no extant phenomena that require the existence of souls in order to explain them, and so we do not require them in our model of reality. However, that doesn't change the fact that many people do believe that the spiritual side of human existence is more than a metaphor, and when their arguments are so easily addressed, why not do so? Particularly in a series about philosophy rather than about science - the argument even generalises to cover a wide variety of magical properties that could in principle be asserted as requirements for personhood - if you can say how humans supposedly acquire that property, then why not mimic that process for a robot; if you can't, then how can you say it can't also operate for a robot?
