As long as there are human needs to fulfill, there will be jobs. I think if anything, we will shift to an era where creativity is more important, and people will extract more value by unique / different things. Once all of these mindless, repetitive tasks that we complain about (most 9-5 jobs) are automated, we can focus on those new and different solutions, rather than just doing work that should be automated and requires no creativity. As long as we properly tax those who are automating everything, there's no reason why average people shouldn't still have enough resources compared to right now. Automation has been happening since the dawn of civilization, and it's been a good thing. Jobs will shift elsewhere. A lot of people from our generation just like to complain because they have no value to offer, since they followed their parents and teachers advice and just went through the traditional education system, which to little surprise doesn't teach them any valuable real world skills. In short, I don't think automation of jobs will cause society to fail, but other unrelated factors potentially could, as always.
