As a software programmer, this is mostly believed by people who have never written any production code. I get why they think that tho, all they see is "Wow, this LLM spits out code!" and immediately think software industry is screwed. It goes much much deeper than that.
It's similar to say... asking LLM's to design architectural schema's on their own, for important structures like bridges and buildings. And then when it spits out something resembling a real schema, you immediately think all architects are out of a job soon.
I think that if software development was fully automated (and done well), then literally every single job on the planet would be automated soon after or even before... except for the ones that we dont want to automate for human connection.
