Regarding the question if the application is allowed to make money from an open source solution, I would suggest to look at the solution license. There are different types of open source licenses, some of them allow commercial solutions to use them, others do not.
I haven't checked the repository, so I don't know what the licence is, but for anyone curious usually the licence info can be found alongside the repository of an open source project.
EDIT: I am actually expecting that the developers of the open source AI to probably change the licence in the future versions of the code after all this publicity, so at least they will get paid (or the corporations using it will be stuck in an outdated version without support)
