In most parts of the world, pedestrians don't have to use any particular crossing point, and are allowed on any part of the road, except for special roads like autobahns / motorways / autoroutes / call them what you like.
As such, any self-driving car should expect them, and most importantly, should be driving suitably to to be able to react to them. They should, no no account, ever, speed, because if the worst does happen, and a collision occurs, a slower speed collision will always result in fewer injuries and a better result for anyone involved in the collision.
If the pedestrian, pushing her bicycle across the road was a moose / elk / fox / dog / elephant, you should still expect the self-driving vehicle to be able to avoid the collision, even if the elk wasn't wearing high viz at the time.
