7:02 the way most of these students are using AI is truly asking the robot to lift weights for you: “write an essay about the theme of Animal Farm.” you’re not actually thinking through the topic and understanding the material. it’s just copy-pasting. you gain absolutely nothing from this other than fulfilling the goal of “do good, get grade.” (the US education system has deeper problems about teaching to the test, instead of actual learning, but i digress.)
the more beneficial (and ethical!) way for students to use AI is more like having the AI demonstrate proper form and the benefits of different exercises: “list some possible themes of Animal Farm with quotes from the book that support it.” it gives you a starting point, but you still have to do the analysis and wordsmithing that it takes to write the full essay. you still have to go through the cognitive legwork that will actually benefit you in the future.
