I've already lost my decade-long career as a freelance writer because of AI, was cut off trying to pivot to art the year after, and was again cut off mid-certification for medical coding the following year, when I tried to pivot to a different industry after realizing AI was destroying the creative marketplace. After bouncing around with gig work, I luckily got a job training AI, which I hate, but I'm grateful for the income. I haven't been able to land anything else - everyone just uses AI now. Thought transitioning to tech might help, learning more about AI, so went back to school last year to study programming. Then I realized what was happening. The AI learns far faster than I can. So I dropped out. I can't afford to spend the money when it's not going to do anything for me. Even if I completed a degree in programming, all entry level jobs will be gone by the time I graduate, and the schools are behind on the tech - no one will hire me without experience. Honestly, I don't know what I'm going to do. I'm unable to do manual labor bc decades old chronic injuries. I guess I will float for another year or two until AI can train itself, then I will be out of a job again. Then the job market will be even harder with so many others also out of work. Maybe there will still be gig work available, maybe enough to cobble together rent, maybe not, who knows? I anticipate myself ending up homeless and dying in a ditch. I can't think about the future without getting uncontrollably depressed. I understand AI can be really useful and has a lot of positive potential, but let's be real. Globally, we have all the resources now to take care of everyone in the world, but we don't. We know what to do to fight climate change, but we don't do it. The US is the richest country in the world, but we won't even give our people healthcare. UBI? I don't think so, at least not in the US. AI is not going to change human nature, and that nature is full of fatal flaws. Greed, hubris, selfishness, etc. The rich and powerful will suck as much out of the system as they can, and leave the rest of us to starve. The future is grim. I keep trying to figure out what to do to build a boat that will stay afloat on these waves, but I can't think of anything. The market will need only so many plumbers.
