BLUF: You’re thinking about it all wrong. Jobs, consumer spending, debt, money, and taxes are not needed in a post labor economy. * * * * For all of human history, economic activity has been pegged to human labor. The extraction of natural resources required people to work and the end result, the fruits of labor, was valuable because it exacted a cost in terms of time and effort. This looked like a tribe of hunters taking down a big game animal to feed their families. That meat was very valuable because it cost them time, effort, and sometimes a person’s life to get, but it was worth the effort because it ensured their survival for maybe one more winter. As society evolved and commerce grew more complex, the cost of labor input at every step of production was factored into the price of the final good or service. This is true even today. Now we are talking about removing the input of human labor altogether from nearly all goods and services. This effectively reduces the price of everything to near zero. This is especially true once we have built the machines that can automate the building and maintenance of all machines. The point is, we won’t need jobs. Nor will we need consumer spending, or taxes, or money for that matter. No real need for governments in their current form either. But what about safe, comfortable, and pleasant housing? Free and abundant. But what about food and water? Free and abundant. But what about clothing? Healthcare? Education? Free and abundant. It is such a mindset shift that even most of the forward thinkers in these spaces have yet to fully grasp it. Or if they do, they’re not letting on because there is still a short period of time to wring some material wealth out of the current system before it all becomes obsolete. Yes, there will be a transition period. And yes, it will be turbulent. Most of the people at the top of the current paradigm are scrambling for all the riches, power, and status they can get. But it won’t be long before we can see around the corner and I’m telling you, grinding for these things is pointless in the long run. It’s just hard for the elite to accept because this means for all of their reasoning as to why they are exceptional (sometimes justified, sometimes not), they will now have to accept that everyone everywhere will have access to much of the same material wealth they do.
