My first encounter with the name Geoffrey Hinton was in an introductory course to AI at varsity. And I thank you, DOAC, for an in-depth, deeper dive into his current state of thinking, because in varsity, we only learn about his past technical work and achievements, not his present AI philosophy. On the, "Learn to be a plumber" advice..... I strongly disagree! Assuming the advice is intended for the approximately 10.9 million subscribers of this channel and the additional +20 million non-subscribed viewers this video will reach. That is just way too many plumbers and we will be leaving the creation of future AI systems to a few individuals, like the Elon Musks of this world, whom he is warning us about and who are already heavily invested in AI to dictate the direction the AI revolution takes. No Prof! We just cannot let that happen! We need to liberalise the creation of AI and let more people with varying degrees of moral compasses dictate the direction and outcome of this revolution. There is this outrageous fallacy that, learning programming today is a waste of time and we therefore should allow systems like that radical right-wing Grok to write all the code. We cannot and should not let that happen. The answer is Open Source! Not monopolising AI in the name of Safety. AI has already gone mainstream and mass adoption has already happened. So saying, for our own safety, we should all be plumbers, is just counterintuitive.
