I wish people would stop calling it AI, because it's a misleading term. The correct term is Large Language Model, or LLM, which is really just predictive text on steroids. They're not "intelligent" in any measurable way.
With an LLM, a single word is represented by a point in a vector space that has a few thousand dimensions. A sentence is a set of points that make up a curve in this vector space, so when you say something to chat gpt, the response is simply an algorithm approximating the rest of the curve. It's exactly like doing a regression formula with a set of data.
In simple terms, chat gpt is nothing like data from star trek and much more like a graphing calculator.
