My 15 yo spent his entire sophomore year of high school engaging with various AI companions. During the summer, he really engaged with it a lot less, but he says he likes it because he doesn't have friends and he's disabled so it's difficult for him to make friends due to communication problems. He's in regular public school special education. He has talking group in school, but he really keeps to himself and is a big gamer - although he doesn't use a headset or socialize while he's gaming. This is definitely going to have an impact on him.
I guess I don't see how it's very different than me talking to my pet 🐈 all day. At least chatbots have an intelligent response instead of a "meow"! 😅
