I truely hate this discussion by now. There is so much wrong on both sides. I think literally stealing content is not ok. But I do think generative ai has a place in this world. One of the biggest problems is that corporate greed (especially corporations like META) is ruining it for both sides. It should be fine to use CC0 content to train your AI's. Also it should be possible to use content that is out of copyright. But if it's the content of an artist that is scraping a hard earned paycheck from it you should ask for consent to use it and then also pay that artist for his / her art.
I do however think that AI content isn't per se a problem (I'm not mentioning the environmental strain here... I know, but that's a whole other problem) There are plenty of things that AI is good for. And the fact that it can (badly) copy a style... Well, that's what most artists do too. You learn by copying styles of others and in the end you combine those learned things into your own style. And you probably use your own AI, aka Brain 1.0, Eyes 1.4 and Ears 2.6 for obtaining this data from all potential sources, including the copyrighted ones.
AI companies should be weary of how and where they obtain training data.. They also should crack down on misuse of their userbase. The clause in midjourney where they threaten users to sue them for abusing their tool is good. I think weapon manufacturers should start doing this too! Whatever the reason is; covering your own @ss or actually preventing abuse for wholesome reasons has the same effect. It will deter a part of the users from abusing the system that would otherwise do so.
Artists on the other hand should stop screaming aimlessly that AI is bad and that they are being f-ed over all the time... You and 99,9% of the world... Stop whining. You aren't more special then anyone else currently suffering from corporate greed, individualism and late stage capitalism. Don't make a fist agains AI, but make a fist against corpoorate abuse, lobbying etc. Make that fist together with the ones using ai for creating a few character portraits for their D&D character instead of berating them for using AI in the first place.
The reason why they fight back so hard is because you shout at them instead of the actual culprits. And that creates a vicious circle that leaves all the goodies for the taking for those corps that just care about their shareholders and their own wallet.
