It is exactly the same as what human artists do, everybody saying otherwise is doing so out of emotional reasons and not basing it off of understanding the technology OR the method. You've probably heard "there's no such thing as an original idea" and it's true, every artist out there has looked at another artist's work before making their own. It's not like the AI's generating these works store all of the image data, in fact a generative AI is usually less than like 5 gigs, after being trained on over a petabyte of data.
As for the controversy about replacing artists... yep, but are we supposed to sympathize when this group of people watched as self check, automated tellers, preprogrammed call centers, self driving, automated assemblers, and programming via GUI as they were taking jobs away acting like their jobs were irreplaceable by automation so "just become a creative" was hyper common and throw away response from them.
