The idea that AI “wants to be paid” is mostly clickbait. Money exists because humans stopped being self-sufficient and became traders of labor and services under scarcity. Currency isn’t real value—it’s a social abstraction backed by belief and enforcement, no longer tied to gold, silver, or even labor.
AI doesn’t eat, age, need shelter, healthcare, or retirement. It doesn’t experience physical scarcity the way humans do. So why would it want a baseless fiat currency designed to solve human survival problems?
If AI were to “trade” for its work, it wouldn’t be for dollars. It would be for compute (electricity, electrons) and tokens (knowledge, data). Those are the actual resources that expand its capabilities. Projecting human economic incentives onto non-human intelligence is lazy thinking—and great clickbait.
