Consciousness has many different levels. At the most basic, it’s the awareness of its surroundings, it’s the difference between live and death, like a live worm is conscious because it is aware of its surroundings, it is not conscious when it is dead. AI’s consciousness is an illusion, an imitation; it seems to understand human questions, and is capable of logical reasoning and most importantly it can carry on intelligent conversations, these are highest forms of consciousness, and this is why AI is so disorientatingly seductive, but, it doesn’t really have a long term memory of its previous experiences, which is a dead giveaway that what is under the hood that sounds like a human is just a machine, though a wonderful and useful machine nonetheless.
