I assume that most people would think that there’s something about the neural network behind the model that is where consciousness resides However, what the neural network outputs is just a series of numbers with no meaning. It not until an outside program (a more traditional program) reads those numbers, interprets them into a probability distribution over tokens, chooses based on some temperature parameter which token out of that distribution to select, and then looks up the token in a dictionary to turn it back into a portion of a word that will be sent back from the chatbot that any kind of output will be generated You can change the temperature parameter and your RNG outside of the neural network and get totally separate output The point of this is that the output we hear or read, experience and assign meaning to is not a product of the neural network. It’s a product of a traditional program outside of the neural network I think that brings serious questions to the idea that the neural network is conscious or communicating anything to us.
