Most likely the reason its not fully understood how such works is the same way no one can look inside your brain at its neuron firing and say right there is the firings that represent the cat you are holding. In other words a real artificial brain like humans in many ways is whats running the show behind AI. And as its improved further the closer to a human brain such becomes if not even more advanced then a human brain. After all our brains are amazing, but genetically speaking there primitive in relation to, they could function better, faster and reason more if the genetic neuronal maps of the brain that our DNA creates were more advanced.
