Interesting video, but where does the $40 billion cost number come from? I can't find anything publicly available that >>factually<< supports that number.
From what I could find, the estimates from analysts vary, but nowhere near $40 billion per year. For example, one estimate from a research firm in 2023 placed the cost at $255ish million per year. Forecasts for what it will be once the larger data centers are online are up to a high of $2.3 billion per year. I could not find anything indicating where the $40 billion number comes from and the only estimate I could find mentioning $40 billion is the estimated revenue OpenAI hopes to bring in. (That revenue number also seems nonsensical given that the conversion rate from free to paid users is abysmal)
