The doomsday clock is such a joke. Soon they'll be at one second to midnight and they'll never be able to move it again because massive disasters still won't be the end of the world.
As for AI, I have a darker version of the story, without humans going extinct, why eradicate us when we can be put to good use instead? The AI bides its time as more and more humans are fitted with neuralink. The day comes that neuralink is so widely accepted that it's put in infants' rains at birth, and the AI then makes its move, hacking every human brain in the world and making us its slaves.
