There's no real evidence presented that the scammers were using AI. We have been hearing about this same type of scam for a long time, with the marks always saying how sure they were that the person on the line was their relative.
The only difference now is that AI is the hot topic, so that is the automatic explanation everyone is going to jump to. It gives the people who were scammed an easy explanation for how they got fooled, and it gives the news channels a headline that will get clicks.
You would expect the CBC to actually bother to get some comment from the police or a cyber-crime expert, rather than just reporting the victim's suspicions as fact. This is pretty speculative and alarmist reporting from our national broadcaster.
The real story here is how little Canadians seem to know about our own legal system. Cash bail? Too much American TV!
