As someone who works in AI, I can confidently say that among Western nations, the U.S. is alarmingly unprepared for the societal disruptions this technology is about to cause. Unlike countries with strong social safety nets, the U.S. lacks meaningful infrastructure to support the millions who may soon find themselves displaced - across both white- and also their downstream impact on blue collar sectors. AI isn’t coming for jobs someday- it’s already happening. Companies are not hiring as they are doing AI first strategies. And AI is now rapidly improving every quarter - not year, more jobs are at risk is this improvement exponentially grows. This isn’t fearmongering; it’s economic reality. When people lose income, they stop spending. The people who bought those premium products of yours? Gone. That means no people for shipping them, selling them, etc. And when spending collapses, so does the consumer economy capitalism relies on. To avoid a full-scale economic and societal breakdown, congress need to act now. And we have a bunch of old people who don't have a clue in charge. I don't care if it's Trump or Nancy Pelosi - these people do not have the knowledge to govern for what is coming next. This requires serious, non-partisan conversations around Universal Basic Income (UBI) as a temporary stop gap, while society figures out what a sustainable future of work looks like. Leaders like Andrew Yang, Sam Altman, and many within the AI ethics community have all advocated for some version of this because they no what is going to happen. It can be the best world, but if the current US governing trends continue it will VERY VERY LIKELY be DARK FUTURE ahead. Whether you’re for capitalism or something else, the truth is if consumers have no money, the system breaks. We need investment in mass retraining and education for new roles that AI can’t easily replicate. I suppose, alternatively we can embrace a different vision with shorter work weeks, job sharing, and giving people more time to live fulfilling lives while AI handles the rest. I just don't see the greedy CEO's and lawmakers in charge going that direction. Cuz... you know... why should average people be able to live a happy stress free financially secure life? I will say this now to anybody listening Republican and Democrat alike - giving people money isn’t a “handout.” It’s a circulatory system for a modern economy powered by automation. HEED THIS WARNING!!! If we fail to prepare, we’ll pay the price with increasing unrest, and eventually collapse. But if as a collective group of people who are proactive...we can build something more equitable, efficient, and humane for everyone. This won't prevent CEO's from gathering the powers of the leaders of nations, but it will at least mean regular people have some skin in the gaem.
