Here’s my take, let me preface with saying I’m a ML research student and I have two views on this topic. In many ways AI and ML models will exist no matter what we do, so I think it’s better for artists to learn more how to implement them into their work, find ways to grow with them to enhance their abilities. On the other hand, I believe one of the largest reason AI ethics research is blowing up right now is because of the lack of accountability within AI. While I do agree with many, posting online does mean people can see your work, but that doesn’t mean you have the right to take it and republish it at your own. Along with this, human artists take decades to develop skills, techniques and styles they use. They’re learning and building on top of previous knowledge. Without this information to train ML models, they wouldn’t be able to replicate anything. I think it’s important to keep that in mind. Similar to how SWE’s are up in arms about their work being stolen (Microsoft being sued for their use of Open Source code in the creation of CoPilot), artists love developing work, but it’s disheartening when your skills are being used without your consent.
