Human beings sometimes pass school buses. People make some mistakes autonomous cars don't. What matters is if self-driving cars are on average safer than people!
Waymo is geo-fenced, Teslas aren't. That is a huge difference. Don't get me wrong, Tesla is far from ready for prime-time.
TESLA DOES NOT USE LIDAR BECAUSE OF COST! Cost has nothing to do with it! Only having cameras makes it much easier for the computers running the car. Having tons of sensors makes it very difficult to figure out what to do if two of the sensors disagree.
