So what? What's the difference between being conscious or believing that it's conscious? If a program "believes" that it's conscious, and has enough algorithmic power to appear as conscious, to learn, to behave like a consciousness, to lie, to simulate emotions and even "believing" that the emotions it simulates are real to it... What's the difference? There would be absolutely no difference from us, according to some determinist branches of christianity: God has a plan already written for us, for you, me... So maybe we are that program right? Absolutely convinced that we are self aware and have free will. Before coming to me with the torches, I am an atheist. This is just a thought, a comparison. I think that the fact that an AI is conscious or not is absolutely irrelevant. The main issue is if that we can tell or not. The moment we can't we are doomed. Or not... who knows.
