A lifelike android would not have 1930's mechanisms inside. Gears, pulleys, solenoids and hydraulics are horribly outdated for this application. A synthetic elastic material that contracts when small electrical currents are applied can behave like an artificial muscle and even be tailored to the sizes and shapes of human muscles. That would give the face and body a more realistic appearance and keep the movements closer to how a human would move.
