while I understand that the artists may be p*ssed because of AI art, they aren't being 100% fair. sure, they train using copyright material but, so do most musicians when they begin to practice with simple melodies. those melodies are under copyright but they use them to practice and nobody complains about it. if I go to museums and or galeries and study the style of a painter so I can get inspiration, I'm training with copyrighted material but nobody would give two sh*ts. if I'm able to make perfect copies of those pieces of art, good for me. I can't sell copies of those works without giving proper credit and/or asking permision to the original author but nothing prevents me from making a new one inspired on something made by another artist. in fact, Marvel and DC had to create, in the past, gender swap copies of their own characters to avoid the other making a perfect copy with a diferent gender. that's why we got characters like supergirl or spiderwoman. Wonder man existed (and was a marvel character) but was a complete failure. the real difference is that an AI learns faster and can produce better quality (or will once a few inconsistencies, like hands, are solved) than human artists. they will be less creative than a human but their work will be faster and with more quality. evidently, this p*sses artists. in the same way that computers made accountants obsolete so they got p*ssed off (and got fired). we rely more on email than on paper mail so, you can be sure, some people got p*ssed off that they lost lots of clients. it's alwys the same, computers can do things faster and more accurately but at the cost of being more soulless. by the way. an AI can, and does, produce new things. they can even create strategies to win a game despite not being told what the rules of the game are. get a small, basic, software that can only say if a move is valid or not connect two instances of an ai to that software and wait for a few weeks/months. the ai will use strategies good enough to beat the crap out of any profesional player. get an AI that makes images and tell it "make me the image of a flying unicorn pursuing an evil ghostlike monster at sunset with the skyline of barcelona" and it will create it. does that image exists in any way shape or form? no. but the AI will take inspiration in what a unicorn is, what flying animals look similar to a unicorn, what ghostlike monsters are considered to look, how's the ilumination of a sunset at barcelona and what kind of bulidings you can find on it's skyline. how did the AI learned those things? same way we do. we saw images of how a unicorn should look. one important thing that you don't seem to clarify. when you say that your work was used, without your consent, to teach the AI, was that work on a private server or openly in the web? because, sorry to say, anything that can be found at google (or any other similar search engine) is free to use. you can't sell them, or take credit, if you don't have the copyright but you can freely use them for whatever you want. making a desktop background for your girlfriend, a background for your sister's cell phone, printing it so your mom can have a nice painting, ... if the images were from a private server, then the problem is that somebody entered illegally on your server. that has nothing to do with an AI. I fully understand the point of view the artists have on this issue, in a sense, I have suffered it myself too. but trying to keep the status quo is a doomed quest. focus on what can be done, not on what you want done.
