I have a cousin who didn't even pass high school due to undiagnosed ADHD, but he's also a self taught computer wizard. He was the kind of nerdy guy who stubbornly gamed on Linux as a teenager in the early 2000's. Well last year he finally landed himself a well paying tech job at a small company, working on weird embedded devices. The only reason he got in was because his roommate worked there. My cousin was very hesitant, as he didn't feel remotely qualified, but his friend practically forced my him to apply for the position, and then put in a good word for him. His patchwork resume full of temp positions was not much to brag about, but he got an interview, spoke really well for himself, got through a 6 month trial period and got hired for real. Still feeling like a shameful nepo-hire my cousin remains very apologetic about his high wage. His starting pay was 3 times greater than either of his parents ever made, so he takes this job extremely seriously. More than anything he's terrified of disappointing the people who gave him this golden opportunity. I just find there's this stark contrast against this new admin position which opened at my old job. It strictly required a university degree. They openly didn't care what degree, as long as you had a degree. No wonder I've met so many people who stacked their education with meaningless classes in the pre-AI age, just to get that diploma with minimum effort. "Oh you should take this class! I did last year and it was super easy! Didn't have to show up for any lectures or do any assignments. I just read the text book the last week before the exam and got an A." In this case generative AI is not the problem. It's a highly streamlined solution to a separate silly problem. Too many entry level positions require degrees specifically just to get an interview and little else.
