The interesting thing as you were reading that paper to us, is that I imagine that's also what people said when discussions of freeing slaves first came about. They are not beings worthy of being called human. In fact, in the United States they were not even considered completely. Humans. Figuratively and literally. I don't believe that AI is conscious, but there's a point where one must consider whether the human mind itself is simply a simulation of consciousness. That is so good that it fools us as it did Descartes.
Again I'm not saying that computers can become conscious. But no matter that we think we are, we have no proof of that either except for that we think therefore we are. But if realistically that is our only proof of true consciousness, if a computer thinks that it is, is it then?
