I don't see a problem with AI using references, that's what all artists do.
The problem is that it is removing human beings from human expression.
I don't want to see computers replacing humans not only in the arts but all over.
I think this argument against references is just a way to avoid saying "we don't want humans to loose jobs" because society has a habit of not caring.
Well I care that mcdonalds are rolling out entirely mechanical restaurants. I care that many different manufacturers have been largely replacing humans for years.
I care that truck drivers will likely be replaced by self driving trucks within 10-20 years.
Eventually what are human beings supposed to do? When even jobs like composer, director, set designer, concept artist etc. will eventually be replaced by A.I.
