3:14 - Complete and utter bs, as someone who got into the mechanical engineering program at the Ohio State Department of Engineering freshman year entering with a 3.75 gpa without using ai up until that point, in the face of the new GE.
Let’s just say if you aren’t doing something clearly wrong and use methods that mask using ai, people don’t get caught and basically everyone but liars do it. Whether it’s getting help from a friend, getting a chegg subscription, having chat gpt or gemini, getting help because of a lack of office hours found in junior level of mechanical engineering major. The ai is not to help the students, it’s to help the university to charge more for shitty services and taking away the TAs that help kids do well. Most of all, the students who get an A to an A- never attend classes unless testing or exams, the rest of us who attend get a C+.
Plus I never understood this one class, and yet they still passed me even after I wanted to retake the class because I didn’t understand key concepts that were crappily taught because many students had access to these classes in high school. At this point, all of my good friends were dropping out of the major except the guy who barely got a B and also complained just as badly as I did stayed. Out of the other people who left; one went to law, another to industrial, and the final one to accounting.
After this same semester I ran out of grade replacements, and this one class in particular had no office hours of any kind, because the one day a week he was “there” was during class time for said class and he wouldn’t even be there when we needed him most because he was doing research meetings and was just too busy, despite paid essentially twice-three time minimum wage.
Safe to say, after running out of grade replacements, I felt defeated, and it broke me. I didn’t fail because I wasn’t hard working, I failed because the proper learning support (TAs) didn’t exist at a higher level and I thus failed as a result with no one knowledgeable willing to give meaningful help.
I am now attending Ohio Northern University now, and after getting to sit in one of their classes, they do things the right way, and don’t shove ridiculous methods they didn’t teach you to the extent they test you on further down the line in what feels like the witch trials.
So yeah, I’m definitely not going to be abused by the lack of TAs in a small college like ONU, and if you read anything from a state college, be skeptical about what they say because it’s really a pr stunt by the idiots calling the shots who are out for your money, by offering extra meaningless GE classed to add 10 more credit hours to the existing 120 from before the GE (which was claimed to have less hours, they couldn’t be more wrong)
Maybe the content is good for undergrad mechanical engineering, but the way you are taught at a higher level is shitty, especially after 2900, (the last manageable class), all crap breaks loose.
If you read this far, I would be happy to talk about my experience in further detail leading up to this point.
I did offer suggestions for improvement for teachers but some are just too stubborn and pig headed to change. 😅
