As a writer myself, I deal with a lot of writers who just love AI, and after years of listening to their arguments, I think I understand what's going on. Creative people have egos - I'm sorry but we all do. Or maybe ego is the wrong word. A sense of pride in our ideas. Writing is one of the few creative endeavors that can be done completely alone... if you're writing novels. So there's no sense of "sharing" an idea, and collaboration is not a deeply entrenched part of the experience. The indie world has also been HIGHLY focused on cutting costs for a long time. A lot of people don't think you should, or need to, pay for anything. Editing? Eh nobody cares. But the visual art required for marketing has always been a sticking point; covers, and in some cases, interior illustrations, have long needed a human to help produce. Indies don't like this. They don't like the money they have to spend (and let me be honest here guys, good art is EXPENSIVE). I think we almost resent it. I can tell a good story but now I have to pay somebody $500 for a genre-correct cover just in order to sell it? That's not fair! People should love my book for its content not its cover! That kind of attitude. But more than that, I think they don't like sharing their ideas. The idea of letting somebody else come in and take ownership of part of the story just doesn't sit well. So it doesn't surprise me at all that writers are so excited about AI generated images. Most writers don't have a great sense of visual art, so they can't rationally evaluate images to understand when things are off (not everybody, but a lot of people). But more than that, it's CHEAP and it doesn't require letting anybody else share your world, and writers love both of those things.
