Great Depression unemployment was 25%. This instilled a sense of frugality in the vast majority of people that lived through that era - instilled values that were passed down a couple generations later.

This is how I (a technologist) look at AI:
* There is a non-zero chance that it will eventually delete humanity. Not by malice, but simply we happen to be in the way or taking up resources it needs.
* There is also a non-zero chance it will provide us a utopian post-labor society
* The most likely scenario is somewhere in the middle, but regardless, it is almost certain it will be messy until things even out
My concern is the point when AI becomes too complex or beyond human comprehension that oversight is impossible. Additionally, the actual AI experts cannot agree on the likely outcomes of AI - although they all nearly agree the next few years will be chaotic.
