The use of AI art is a topic with many layers and issues, as always things are not simply black and white. My mother is an artist herself and uses AI as a support tool for her art, regarding using AI as a reference, of course ideally you would want the real thing but sometimes that's simply not available, in one instance she wanted a reference of a specific species of bird at a certain angle. After searching for an actual picture there wasn't one that matched the desired pose and so an AI picture was used as one piece of reference in that case, with plenty of other actual pictures to insure correct anatomy of the bird. I doubt she would use it for any detailed parts of an image. In her job she writes up a newsletter for a small community, for the newsletter she might generate an image with AI to accompany a story, The image is first checked for AI jank and then corrected manually before being used. To be clear these are not big pieces, they are small pictures on a A5 page. They add life to these newsletter pieces that would otherwise be plain text. As with most tools there's a right and wrong way to use things, AI as it stands cannot replace an artist. Art is about expressing an idea or concept through a medium and on a fundamental level an AI does not have the capacity to comprehend the meaning you want to put into an art piece, but it can have its place in situations where you need something simple and quick, a small art piece on a personalised card or piece of media or to better visualise a concept. As an example, if someone wanted to commission an art piece off you, they could generate an image they are happy with to demonstrate what they want commissioned with any details missing mentioned. All that said the method used to attain these models is horrifically unethical, with the amount of money involved in this it should not have been hard to pay for images for the training data, especially since they just need valid human art and not specific art piece. However blaming a knife for cutting someone does not help, yell at the one holding the knife.
