If China is not pushing AI as fast as possible, no time at all spent of "guard rails", I'd be surprised. The first nation (company?) to get to AGI can beat the competition by as little as a month and have an insurmountable gap due to AGI exponential self improvement.
Speed over caution. Not because it's a good idea, but because it's necessary. It's not like nukes where you can catch up because no one dares to use it. AGI is supposed to be deployed ASAP. It's the only sensible course. Yes, it could kill us. If we don't get there first, it definitely will.
