Unpopular opinion: you CAN use ai generated content for art, but (and that's a big but) you have to make your own decisions for this piece and change it enough so it's completely different from whatever the machine spit out. Making an "original prompt" is NOT what makes it art and will never make it art since the machine makes all the decisions for you. However, imo, if you take a bunch of ai content, cut it, mix it, do something with it YOURSELF, then you can call it art, like a collage. Do you have to use ai for this? Depends on the context and the piece you want to make. Sometimes it can works better with photos created by actual people, sometimes the ai can give you something closer to what you imagined. The involvement of a human and the creative decisions that are completely controlled by a human are what makes an art piece worthy of the title "art." PS: after reading this, you might think of pieces that use randomness, like the stuff Jackson Pollock created. However, I argue that even in this case, decisions are being made. Pollock picks his colors, decides where will he swing his stick and in what way, and, while he still depends on the randomness of the paint, he still controls the composition. So yeah. Even in these cases, there are decisions.
