Rereading Childhood’s End by Clarke led me to replace the Overlords with AI and the Overmind with the Singularity. I then added Maalouf’s vision in The First Century after Beatrice and the issue of overpopulation: if labor is no longer needed, why so many people? The result is a humanity adrift, reduced to mere flesh-and-blood creatures, only slightly above a chimpanzee, scattered in small pockets in the Amazon or Papua New Guinea. Is that too catastrophic?
