I worked in operations for a high-tech electronics firm for 38 years. In electronics manufacturing, many jobs involve sitting at a bench all day, repeating the same task hundreds of times. Work like that can easily lead to burnout or worse—issues like alcoholism or drug abuse. These are the kinds of repetitive jobs companies like Foxconn rely on, and they’re not well-suited for American workers.
Instead, these jobs should be automated. Automation and its maintenance create good jobs—engineering, technical, and skilled trades positions that require knowledge and problem-solving. When Bernie talks about a 400% increase in productivity, where does he think that came from? Automation.
During my career, I often worked 50-hour weeks because it was required, and I understood the need. I wasn’t coerced—it was part of the job. Now Bernie wants 32-hour workweeks. What happened to the American work ethic? Maybe if he had spent some time in the private sector, he’d understand.
