Sure. We 'could' stop developing this emerging new species by ending all the efforts into growing it. I just don't see that happening.
What I do see happening is a sort of 'War of the Worlds' conclusion. And that being that we foolish Humans are building all this AI stuff on a monumental flaw. That being that we're overdue for a successful Carrington Event. And when that thing hits, our high-tech world goes ka-bluey. Major disruptions in the power grid. Massive levels of computer chips, all frying. Orbital satellites turning into metallic junk. Cel-phones. Cars. Credit (and the rest) cards become useless. AND... all this AI stuff fries into a useless state... all because we Humans barely EMP battle hardened our all so precious technological lifestyles from a sun and its PMS fits of fury.
As a history lesson, in War of the Worlds, Humans were helpless to counter the Martian invaders. But good ole Nature KO'ed them... much like she can KO our computer filled lifestyles in a hard hitting second. Dang, Nature. You scary.
