Thank you for a fascinating webcast. Is any of you familiar with the work of Jaynes entitled The Origin of Consciousness in the Breakdown of the Bicameral Mind (1976). Broadly speaking, Jaynes maintains that modern self-awareness arose only around 1000 bc with the increasingly sophisticated articulation of language—all the way to Homer. If this were true - LLMs would easily have become self-aware a few months if not years ago. The book is also fascinating because it posits that before self consciousness under certain critical circumstances humans acted not out of their volition but by responding to impulses imparted by the right brain hemisphere to the left hemisphere and interpreted by this as commands of the god. That explains inter alia the importance of religion in ancient times. .
