SO TRUE! I don't draw, but I do write, which is another creative field overrun with AI slop. And I like to think I'm a pretty good writer. But I wasn't born with talent. I will say that I am luckier than a lot of people in that my parents encouraged my creative endeavors. And they would have, whether I had become passionate about writing as I did, or something else like drawing, dance, music, whatever. And I'm sure if I had decided to put as much effort in any of those as I have in writing I would've ended up being pretty good in whatever I chose. But I also think I would've sucked when I started. Because when I started writing I sucked. Seriously, I've got some old notebooks of writing going back to when I was in the second grade. I was bad. In high school I was still pretty bad. A lot better than I was in second grade, but still pretty bad. But I worked on it and got better. And if I'm on AO3 and I see some fanfic that is pretty bad and the person says it's their first time writing like that I applaud that! It's fantastically brave and as long as they don't give up they can become as good as any writer who ever lived. So I won't tell them all the ways it's bad. Instead I'll find whatever is good in it and praise that. I'll tell them that part worked well. Or I'll tell them that I can tell they were passionate about writing it. Or something else encouraging. And that's how you get good at writing, or art, or whatever. Don't give up, and be willing to suck, and keep doing it.
